Eldos, what went wrong is that one group (non-Malays) was openly, overtly, discriminated against in every aspect of life and the other, the bumis, was given every benefit and advantage whether deserved or not.
How long can the corrupt government keep the downtrodden down? How many generations can the lalang be allowed to thrive? While they are being fattened, the lalang has been too unmotivated to compete with other countries in learning and business. The level of English spoken by the last couple of generations of school graduates is shamefully abysmal. If they cannot be understood by trading partners, how can they progress? This is what went wrong, and this is the shame of our country.

I would agree with Anon 5:05 that language is not the sole polbrem and may not necessary be the polbrem. Language is a tool and English is a useful tool to acquire knowledge. Many countries do not need English to progress, and many countries have English but failed to progress. India benefitted from retaining the English Language as a tool for communication, learning, business and govt. Would retaining English help in Malaysia? It may. Malaysia could still progress without English. What went wrong?

Actually a BN (UMNO) or PR victory would probaly not have adverse consequences to affect peace and stability provided known racists/corrupt/inefficient candidates from UMNO are openly identified in advance to the public as such by PR with an open call to the electorate to defeat them. They include people like DPM Muhiyddin, Home Minister Hishammudin, Mukriz Mahathir and the UMNO supporting Ibrahim Ali. The PR should field strong candidates against them to secure their defeat.

There are also potential “kathaks” within the PR ranks and they should be silently dropped as candidates at the last minute.

Najib, Nazri, Khairy and the likes should be spared from being targeted as they appear to be more serious in wanting to reform UMNO for the better.

The meddling Sultans are another group who needs to be put in their proper place. This can be more effectively done, hopefully with PR rather than UMNO winning the coming GE.
